Rev. Steve and Rosa Whitfield joined St. Peter’s congregation in December 2009. Father Steve came out of retirement to assist St. Peter’s in rebuilding their body of faith. Even though he has only just begun his work here, his wisdom and spirit have shown he is an asset to our community and certainly to St. Peter’s.

Upon Graduation from the University of Texas with a degree in business in 1971, he entered the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. In 1975, he was ordained as a priest and served on staff at a large church in Dallas in its youth ministry.

In 1977, Father Steve had his first chance to serve as a rector at St. Mary’s in Lampasas. From there he was involved for the next five years with pastoral counseling at St. David’s in Austin. For seven years after that, he did another stint as rector of a large – and getting larger – church in Kingwood.

Between 1972 and 1979, Father Steve was the chaplain at the Student Center of the All Saints Church on the University of Texas campus. Father Steve commented he never expected he would have stayed there that long but he loved the assignment. It was his favorite ministry. That is, of course, before he met St. Peter’s congregation. He said that while large churches offer a wonderful assortment of services, smaller churches allow for a closer sense of family and usually a bit more relaxed atmosphere.

His last ministry was as rector of Christ’s Church in Eagle Lake where he served for 10 years until his official retirement. While there, Father Steve not only met his obligations to the church but also involved himself in the community. This included being president of the local rotary club, board chair to the Youth & Family Counseling Crisis Center and serving on the board to the Rice Medical Center Hospital. He even took training as an EMT and made between four to five ambulance runs each week.    Back to Top
